Capital Raises

OpenAI Raises $11 Billion at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation

OpenAI closed $11 billion, the first part of a round valuing it at $1.25 trillion, below the $1.5 trillion it first sought and short of a $30 billion goal.

OpenAI closed on $11 billion of new funding, the first piece of a round that values the artificial-intelligence company at $1.25 trillion, according to people familiar with the matter, as investors grow more selective about the prices they will pay for AI developers.

The initial close covers a little more than a third of the up to $30 billion OpenAI had originally hoped to raise. The round is expected to finish in the coming weeks and could total roughly $20 billion, the people said. The valuation also sits below the roughly $1.5 trillion level the company first floated with investors. MERGER MONDAY reported on Nov. 1 that the target had been trimmed toward $20 billion at about $1.25 trillion; Friday’s close puts money behind those terms.

SoftBank and MGX return

SoftBank Group and MGX, the Abu Dhabi technology investor, participated in the first close, according to investors in the deal. OpenAI didn’t publicly announce the financing or detail how the shares are structured.

The raise lands in a rough week for AI stocks. The Nasdaq 100 fell 6.4% on Thursday, one of its worst sessions on record, as investors weighed heavy data-center spending and the prospect of tighter oversight after Democrats won control of Congress in the midterm elections.

A benchmark for Anthropic

The price matters well beyond OpenAI. Rival Anthropic is preparing to market its initial public offering as soon as next week, and prospective buyers have been lowering the valuations they are willing to support, with some discussing figures near $1.1 trillion. Anthropic was valued at $965 billion in a private round in May and briefly passed OpenAI on that measure.

OpenAI has said it could go public eventually but has pushed back earlier timelines. For now, the company is leaning on private investors to fund the chips, data centers and research that its products require, and Friday’s close shows they are still writing large checks, just at lower prices than the company first sought.
